Set & Props:  Bible

NOTE:         ONE TIME INTRO:  when doing this skit
.             outside of the series, use this

(DARREN and BROOK enter.  DARREN carries a Bible.)

BROOK         Does the Jacob-story continue?

DARREN        Ready for imagination time travel?

BROOK         Yeah.  I’m wondering if Jacob is
.             still afraid of his brother, Esau.

(DARREN holds the Bible up, while he and BROOK
both open the Bible together, eyes wide, excited
and looking around wondering what will happen.)

(JACOB and MESSENGER enter and stop.  JACOB looks
off stage in the other direction, like he’s thinking.
He also looks concerned.)

DARREN        That would probably be Jacob over there
.             with - some - dude.

MESSENGER     (to JACOB)  Jacob, we ARE getting closer.
.             Do you think Esau is still angry?

JACOB         A lot of time has passed.

MESSENGER     Still, you know what you did to him-

JACOB         I know.  Sneaking around- I mean,         2
.             I’ll be honest - stealing his birthright
.             and his blessing from Father – that was
.             very wrong of me!  And I am very concerned.

MESSENGER     So if you are that worried
.             about meeting up with your brother –
.             what are you going to do?

JACOB         I am going to send Esau a gift.
.             I would like you to get that ready for me
.             and then deliver that - with a message.

MESSENGER     And what is the gift?

JACOB         I want to send him some oxen,
.             and donkeys, and flocks-

MESSENGER     Of chickens?

JACOB         A bunch of whatever we have in stock.
.             AS WELL, some male and female servants.

MESSENGER     That is very generous of you.

JACOB         Esau is probably very angry with me.
.             So, also give my brother this message -
.             that - I hope to find favor in his sight.

MESSENGER     I will get right on that.

(MESSENGER exits in the opposite direction.
DARREN and BROOK watch was JACOB paces.)

DARREN        Well, I’m sure this will take a while.

BROOK         So what happens next?

(DARREN turns a page in the Bible, and
MESSENGER returns, out of breath.  JACOB looks at him.)

JACOB         Well?  Did you find him?  Was he angry?

MESSENGER     (still panting)  We found him.
.             And he is on his way to meet you.

JACOB         Ah-

MESSENGER     With 400 men.

JACOB         (now very afraid)  Oh-oh.  Now what?      3
.             This could be revenge.  He probably
.             wants to hurt me and my family.

MESSENGER     What do you want to do now?

JACOB         Go - divide up my family and
.             everything I own – into two groups.
.             That way, if Esau attacks one group,
.             the other group can escape.  Now!  Go!

(MESSENGER rushes off the way they both first entered.
JACOB paces again.)

BROOK         That’s it?  I can think of something else
.             that would help way more.

(JACOB falls to his knees and looks up in prayer,

BROOK         And that’s what I was talking about.

JACOB         O Lord, my God, when I consider
.             all the wrong that I have done -
.             I am so unworthy of all your lovingkindness
.             and the faithfulness You have shown to me!
.             But You told me to return to my country
.             and to my relatives.  And You said
.             that I would prosper.  But now my brother
.             is coming to see me.  I am afraid
.             that he will attack!  Please deliver me!
.             I pray, remember Your promise to me!

(MESSENGER enters again and JACOB notices.)

JACOB         We need to get more gifts ready.
.             Have my servants send them bit by bit
.             so Esau will keep meeting up with them
.             on his way here.

MESSENGER     Okay, so what will the gifts be this time?

JACOB         Ah, let’s see.  Start with...
.             200 female goats and 20 male goats,
.             then send out 200 sheep and 20 rams,
.             then 30 milking camels and their colts,
.             and then - 40 cows and 10 bulls,
.             and... may as well follow that up with
.             20 female donkeys and 10 male donkeys.

(MESSENGER rushes off the stage in opposite direction.  4
and DARREN and BROOK watch as JACOB paces again.)

DARREN        That could take a while.

BROOK         I can’t take this any longer!
.             Tell me what happens!  Just - jump ahead!

(DARREN turns a page of the Bible.
JACOB begins to pace with a limp.)

BROOK         Why is Jacob now limping?
.             Did his brother arrive and hurt him?
.             What did we miss?

(DARREN looks at the Bible to read quickly.)

DARREN        Ah, well, after a night of wrestling
.             a mysterious man – which probably was
.             God Himself in the form of a man –
.             Jacob’s hip was put out place –

BROOK         So Jacob was wrestling with some
.             seriously huge spiritual things.

DARREN        And Jacob was not going to give up
.             until he was blessed.  Which probably
.             involved staying safe from his brother.
.             God then told Jacob that his name
.             would now be “Israel” - because he had
.             fought with God and men - and prevailed.

BROOK         Okay, so now what?  What about his brother?

(JACOB stops cold as ESAU enters from opposite side.)

JACOB         Esau.

(ESAU rushes up to JACOB to hug.)

ESAU          Jacob, my brother!

JACOB         I was hoping the gifts would be enough.

(ESAU stops hugging, but keeps his hands
on JACOB’s shoulders.)

ESAU          Jacob, I do not need your gifts.

JACOB         No, really, I want you to keep them.
.                                                       5
ESAU          It is not necessary.

JACOB         Esau, I insist.  It is to find favor
.             with you.  If you keep the gifts,
.             I will know that you have forgiven me.

ESAU          I forgive you, my brother.

JACOB         Come, I want you to meet my family.

(JACOB leads ESAU off stage the way JACOB had entered.)

BROOK         So – that was happy ending.

DARREN        (looking at the Bible)
.             Yes.  Jacob bought some land,
.             and they settled down in that area.

(INCLUDE ENDING:  unless going right into the
next skit.)

(DARREN closes the Bible.)

BROOK         I wonder if things will stay happy?

DARREN        We will find out next time.
