SCRIPT:

SCENE ONE

(ACTORS enter and lounge around talking, while sipping
on sodas...  TEACHER and CHILDREN enter.)

TEACHER     Ah, what’s this?  Oh, that’s right,
.           I heard that the church is performing
.           some of our favorite Bible stories.

CHILD       Can we watch?  Can we watch?

TEACHER     (to ACTORS)  Mind if we watch?

ACTOR/S     Oh, sure.  Not at all, ah, just give us
.           a moment while we – get into place.

(TEACHER and CHILDREN sit on the floor off to the side.
As the ACTORS scramble to their sets, they run around
in confused circles, changing directions and bumping
into each other.  Finally they end up...
ESTHER gets up in the tree,
DAVID sits in the fish,
ZACCHEUS sitting on the throne,
and JONAH standing beside Goliath.)
.                                                       2
SCENE TWO

ACT 1:    ESTHER IS IN THE TREE LOOKING DOWN.

ESTHER    Eeeeeee!  Um, I’m actually afraid of heights,
.         so I have no idea why I’m up in this tree.
.         Although, oh look, I can see over all
.         the people.  Wow, I’ve got a great view.
.         And over there, I think I can see someone
.         important.  People keep calling Him - Jesus!
.         (waves to get attention)  Hi!  Over here!
.         Jesus!  Can You see me?  (shrinking back)
.         Oh, ahhh, why are all the people now looking
.         at ME and booing?  And - they’re calling me
.         a tax-collector!  NOBODY likes a tax-collector.
.         They tend to steal money from people
.         as they collect the taxes.  This is NOT
.         a comfortable place to be at all,
.         even if I WASN’T scared of heights.
.         I think I’m more afraid of the people.
.         Maybe this Jesus can help me?

ACT 2:    DAVID IS IN THE FISH LOOKING AROUND.

DAVID     Man!  Is it smelly in here!
.         Where am I?  Let’s see: it’s very dark,
.         it smells like fish,
.         I’ve got water up to my neck,
.         and there is seaweed wrapped around my body.
.         I think – I am in a big fish?
.         What am I doing in a big fish?
.         Am I being punished by God?  What did I do?
.         What in the world did I do?!
.         Did I disobey God somehow?  You know,
.         ‘cause I DO love God and try to obey him.

ACT 3:    ZACCHEUS SITS ON THRONE.

ZACCHEUS  Hey cool, a throne.  I must have got
.         a promotion.  Hey, I could collect even
.         MORE money now.  I mean, look at this.
.         Although, everything is kind of frou-frou
.         and frilly, like it’s meant more for a queen.
.         There must be a reason for this.
.         I mean with power - comes responsibility.
.         Hah!  Look who’s talking!
.                                                       3
ACT 4:    JONAH STANDS ACROSS FROM GOLIATH.

GOLIATH   Send out your biggest and best warriors.
.         I am not afraid!

JONAH     Oookay.  I really don’t think
.         I am equipped to handle this.
.         I mean, I’m not a warrior.
.         What is going on?  I mean,
.         there are things that God asks me to do,
.         that make WAY more sense than this.

(CHILD raises their hand and looks to the TEACHER.)

CHILD     Excuse me teacher, but this
.         doesn’t make any sense.

TEACHER   I was actually thinking the same thing.
.         (to ACTORS)  Are you sure you’ve
.         got this right?

(ACTORS look at their scripts, then look around
at their sets.  Realizing they are in the wrong spots,
they run around in confusion again until they end up...
JONAH on the throne,
ESTHER in the fish,
DAVID in the tree, and
ZACCHEUS standing beside GOLIATH.)

SCENE THREE

ACT 1:    JONAH SITS ON THRONE.

JONAH     Well, this is comfy.  I wonder what I did
.         to deserve this?  Actually, I haven’t
.         done anything to deserve this.
.         I actually - disobeyed God.
.         (looking around, scared)  Okay, what’s up?
.         I have a scary feeling about this?
.         Seriously!  What’s going to happen?
.         Is a big giant shoe going to come down
.         and squish me – like a big shoe
.         from that giant in the other scene?
.         Even though this throne is comfy,
.         I really do NOT FEEL so comfortable.

ACT 2:    ESTHER IN THE FISH.                           4

ESTHER    Eeeeee, ICKY!!!  What is this?!
.         I think I’m more afraid
.         of the cold water and the dark
.         than I am of heights.  Where am I?
.         Why am I here?  I have a job to do.
.         How in the world can I do that from here?
.         (calming herself)  Okay, okay, calm down.
.         I can pray.  I was going to fast
.         and pray anyway, and I can do that - anywhere.
.         So that’s what I’m going to do then, right now.

ACT 3:    DAVID IN THE TREE.

DAVID     (looking down) Well, this isn’t that bad.
.         (looking out)  Actually, this is great.
.         I was told one day I would be a king,
.         but I think I can see THE King of kings
.         from here.  If only I could speak to Him
.         directly.  Maybe I could if these people
.         were not in my way.  Although, I’m sure,
.         if God wanted, He would come right
.         up to me anyway.

ACT 4:    ZACCHEUS STANDS ACROSS FROM GOLIATH.

GOLIATH   Send out your biggest and best warriors.
.         I am not afraid!  Hey, they keep
.         getting smaller and smaller.

ZACCHEUS  Oh boy, this is not good.  Look how big
.         that guy is, and look how small I am.
.         I wonder if I could bribe him with money.
.         I’ve got plenty of money.  No!  That –
.         probably is not the right thing to do.
.         I really DO want to change my ways – I think.
.         What would make sense here?
.         And I’m not talking about pennies.

(CHILD raises a hand and looks at the TEACHER.)

CHILD     This still isn’t making sense.

ZACCHEUS  That’s just what I think I said.

TEACHER   Are you sure you’re all in the right place?
.                                                       5
(ACTORS look at the scripts again and shake their heads,
then run around in confused circles and end up...
DAVID on throne, JONAH in the tree, ZACCHEUS in the fish,
and ESTHER standing beside GOLIATH.

SCENE FOUR

ACT 1:    DAVID SITS ON THRONE.

DAVID     Now let’s see.  This is a LITTLE more like it.
.         I’m sitting on a throne.  Although – it’s a
.         little girly for my tastes.  And as I think
.         about it, it is probably NOT in God’s timing
.         for me to be king of Israel YET.

ACT 2:    JONAH IN THE TREE.

JONAH     Oh!  There are lots of angry people around me –
.         all looking at me!  Like I’ve done
.         something wrong.  Am I in Ninevah?
.         I know God told me to go there
.         and talk to the people, but I disobeyed
.         and tried to run away!  (calming down)
.         Wait a minute.  That man named Jesus –
.         looks like He’s talking to the people.
.         Maybe that means I don’t have to tell anyone
.         God’s message anymore?

ACT 3:    ZACCHEUS IN THE FISH.

ZACCHEUS  Help, help, I’m in a fish – I’m in a fish!
.         I suppose all my money isn’t going to do me
.         any good here in a big fish.  Come to
.         think of it, in the grand scheme of things,
.         is it worthwhile to steal money at any time?
.         Is there maybe something MORE to life?

ACT 4:    ESTHER STANDS, GOLIATH STEPS OUT.

GOLIATH   Send out your biggest and best warriors.
.         I am not afraid!  Ha ha - especially now that
.         they are sending out the little women now!

ESTHER    Eeeeee!  What is going on?  I have people
.         to save, but not this way – I’m pretty sure
.         of that.  What in the world am I doing here?
.                                                       6
(CHILD raises a hand and looks at TEACHER.)

CHILD     They still have it wrong.

TEACHER   Say, do you actors need some help?

ACTOR/S   Ah, sure, no problem.  It always helps
.         to have some direction.

CHILD     I think I can help!

TEACHER   Why don’t you kids put the actors
.         in their proper places.

(KID/S physically put each character in their spot...
ZACCHEUS in tree, JONAH in the fish,
ESTHER on the throne, and DAVID standing beside GOLIATH.)

SCENE FIVE

ACT 1:    ZACCHEUS IN THE TREE.

ZACCHEUS  Oh, look, I can finally see over
.         all the people and I can see Jesus.
.         And I think - He sees me.
.         He does!  He’s coming this way.
.         Why would He bother with just little ‘ol me?
.         I’m sure Jesus can forgive me, and then use me,
.         even though I’m a tax-collector
.         who has done bad things?

ACT 2:    JONAH IN THE FISH.

JONAH     Definitely!  I have disobeyed God’s command
.         and I am being punished.  I should gone
.         to Ninevah to tell give them God’s message.
.         I suppose it’s still not too late.
.         God has so much compassion and love
.         for everyone.  It doesn’t matter who it is.
.         And because of that, God will still discipline
.         when necessary.  I mean, God had this fish
.         find me and keep me for three days.
.         (looking up)  Nice touch, by the way.
.         It kind of forces one to think and pray,
.         and ask for help.

ACT 3:    ESTHER ON THRONE.                             7

ESTHER    Yes, this is where I am supposed to be.
.         I know that God made me queen for a reason.
.         It is going to be hard to go in front
.         of the king to ask him to protect my people,
.         but God is in control and I can trust God.

ACT 4: DAVID STANDS ACROSS FROM GOLIATH.

GOLIAH    Send out your biggest and best warriors.
.         I am not afraid!  Oh look, and now
.         it’s just a little shepherd boy.

DAVID     It doesn’t matter how small I am!
.         I know that even though I am little,
.         I can do big things in God’s strength.
