Style: drama/conversation: a CHILD wants to know
. if there’s anyone able to keep promises
. they’ve made, and so takes a survey,
. only to learn about the promises of God
Cast: KIDS 1-21 (if you have more or less,
. reassign the dialogue as it makes sense)
Set & Props: backpack, pen, pad of paper or clipboard
. (script can be on the clipboard papers
. for KID 1, and can also be a cheat-sheet
. for the kids being surveyed. To make it
. look more memorized, KID 1 can pretend
. to write down notes now and then.)
(KIDS 1-2 enter and stop at microphone to talk.
KID 1 carries a backpack.)
KID 1 Has someone ever broken a promise
. that they made to you?
KID 2 Sure, lots of times.
KID 1 (angry) But a promise is a promise!
KID 2 I’m assuming someone just broke a promise
. that was made to you. Well... (thinking)
. let me ask YOU something.
. Have you ever broken a promise?
(KID 1 slumps with a guilty sigh. After a pause...)
KID 1 So there’s no one who can keep promises? 2
KID 2 I don’t know. Why don’t you take a survey?
(KID 1 pulls a notepad and pen from a backpack
as KID 2 shrugs and exits.)
KID 1 I will! And I will get to the bottom of this!
(KID 1 stands waiting with notepad poised,
as KIDS 3-4 enter and approach.)
KID 1 Excuse me, I’m taking a survey.
. Would you mind answering some questions?...
. Is there anyone - that you know –
. who is able to keep a promise?
KID 3 Hm, well, our grandparents promised to always
. love each other in marriage until death.
KID 4 And that’s a big promise to keep.
KID 3 So it is possible to do keep a promise.
KID 1 So they have NEVER EVER broken
. any other promises?
KID 4 Ohhhhh, well, there was that time
. grandma promised to make pancakes for us,
. but she forgot to buy flour. It happens.
(KIDS 3-4 shrug and walk away. KIDS 5-6 enter.)
KID 1 (to K5-6) Excuse me. I’m taking a survey
. and asking if you know anyone –
. who is able to keep - ALL their promises?
KID 5 The only one who can keep EVERY promise is God!
KID 1 Interesting. And what is your proof?
KID 5 In the Bible, in 2 Peter 1:4, God says,
. “...He has given us His very great
. and precious PROMISES, so that through them
. you may participate in the divine nature,
. having escaped the corruption in the world
. caused by evil desires.”
KID 1 Okay, so God makes promises. But,
. how do we know that He will keep them?
KID 6 Well, because God – is – well – He’s God.
KID 1 And that is supposed to convince me?
KID 6 Numbers 23:19 says that,
. “God is not human, that He should lie,
. not a human being, that He should
. change His mind.
. Does He speak and then not act?
. Does He promise and not fulfill?”
(KIDS 5-6 walk away with a nod. KID 1 comments to self.)
KID 1 I don’t know. Now, I only have MORE questions.
(KID 1 turns and waits for KID 7-10 to enter.)
KID 1 Hi! I’m just wondering, if you know
. of any promises that God has made – and kept?
KID 7 Sure. God has kept all of His promises.
KID 1 And how can you know that?
KID 8 Joshua 23:14 says that,
. “...You know with all your heart and soul
. that not one of all the good PROMISES
. the Lord your God gave you has failed.
. Every promise has been fulfilled;
. not one has failed.”
KID 1 Like what, exactly?
KID 8 Ahhhh... Oh! I know! We just studied that.
KID 7 In Genesis 12:2-3, God says to Israel,
. “I will make you into a great nation,
. and I will bless you;
. I will make your name great,
. and you will be a blessing.
. I will bless those who bless you,
. and whoever curses you I will curse; and all
. peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
KID 1 But how is that proof?
KID 9 All the people on earth have been blessed
. because of Jesus. And Jesus came from
. the people of Israel-
KID 1 How do we know that Jesus really came?
KID 9 There were many witnesses at that time.
. And history supports this.
KID 10 More importantly, the Bible says it.
. Galatians 3:8 says that, “Scripture foresaw
. that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,
. and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham:
. ‘All nations WILL BE blessed through you.’”
KID 1 And how do we know that the Bible is true?
KID 10 2 Timothy 3:16 says that,
. “All Scripture is God-breathed...”
(KIDS 7-10 walk away. KID 1 comments to self.)
KID 1 Those were good answers,
. but now, I have even MORE questions.
(KIDS 11-13 enter and overhear.)
KID 11 What kind of questions.
KID 12 Yes, maybe we can help answer some of them.
KID 1 Can you really? Because,
. I’m looking for some real answers!
KID 11 “Ask and it will be given to you;
. seek and you will find;
. knock and the door will be opened to you.”
KID 13 And that’s a promise, found in Matthew 7:7.
KID 12 And Deuteronomy 4:29 says,
. “...if from there you seek the Lord your God,
. you will find Him if you seek Him
. with all your heart and with all your soul.”
KID 13 So, if you want to find the truth, you will!
. In Matthew 13:16, Jesus promises that,
. “blessed are your eyes because they see,
. and your ears because they hear.”
(KIDS 11-13 exit. KIDS 14-16 enter.)
KID 14 Hey, what were you just talking about?
KID 1 God’s promises to us. Right now, I’m seeking,
. but I’m just not totally seeing it all yet.
. There’s some kind of promise about
. Jesus blessing us - somehow –
. and all I know is - I want to know that.
KID 14 Awesome! Then you should hear what Jesus says
. in John 5:24. “Very truly I tell you, whoever
. hears My word and believes Him who sent Me -
. has eternal life - and will not be judged
. but has crossed over from death - to life.”
KID 1 Life?! What kind of life?
KID 15 Eternal life! John 3:16-17 tells us
. “For God so loved the world
. that He gave His one and only Son,
. that whoever believes in Him
. shall not perish but have ETERNAL life.
. For God did not send His Son into the world
. to condemn the world,
. but to save the world through Him.”
KID 1 Sounds like a very nice promise, but,
. why exactly do I need that?
KID 15 Romans 3:23 says,
. “for all have sinned
. and fall short of the glory of God,”
. and Romans 6:23 says,
. “For the wages of sin is death,
. but the gift of God
. is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
KID 1 If that’s a promise,
. how does that even work?
KID 16 That’s the best part. We don’t do any 6
. of the work. Jesus has done all of the work
. for us. And it is a gift. A free gift.
. “For it is by grace you have been saved,
. through faith — and this is not from yourselves,
. it is the gift of God — not by works,
. so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
KID 1 But, in the past, I have had gifts
. lost or taken away... especially -
. when I’ve been bad.
KID 16 In Ephesians 1:13-14 (NASB version),
. it says, “In Him, you also,
. after listening to the message of truth,
. the gospel of your salvation—
. having also believed,
. you were SEALED in Him
. with the Holy Spirit of PROMISE,
. who is given as a pledge of our inheritance,
. with a view to the redemption of God’s
. own possession, to the praise of His glory.”
(KIDS 14-16 exit. KID 1 calls after them.)
KID 1 Thanks! This is awesome! I do believe in Jesus!
. So now what? Because I believe,
. I won’t have any more problems?
. Will my life be totally perfect?
(KIDS 17 enters to overhear.)
KID 17 Oh, ah, noooo... we are promised
. that we will suffer.
KID 1 Huh? What?!
KID 17 2 Timothy 3:12 says, “In fact,
. everyone who wants to live a godly life
. in Christ Jesus WILL be persecuted.”
KID 1 Well, I know I get upset when promises
. are broken, but- I would not mind if God
. broke this ONE promise.
KID 17 God is not the one who causes us to suffer.
. Suffering is because there’s sin in the world.
(KID 17 exits and KID 1 calls after him/her.)
KID 1 Please, you’ve got to tell me! I mean,
. it’s nice that God saved me from my sins,
. and gave me eternal life after I die,
. BUT WHAT ABOUT RIGHT NOW?
. I’m freaking out, here! This is so scary!
(KIDS 18-21 enter and overhear.)
KID 18 “Do not be anxious about anything,
. but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
. with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
. And the peace of God, which transcends
. all understanding, WILL guard your hearts
. and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
. Philippians 4:6-7
KID 1 And is that a promise? And- what about -
. when we NEED something?
KID 18 “...my God WILL MEET all your needs according
. to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”
. Philippians 4:19
KID 1 What about when a bully picks on me?
KID 18 God “- gives strength to the weary and
. increases the power of the weak.” Isaiah 40:29
KID 1 What if something seems hopeless?
KID 18 “- all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27
KID 1 Even when bad things happen?
KID 19 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, “Praise be
. to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
. the Father of compassion and the God of
. all comfort, who comforts us in ALL our troubles,
. so that we can comfort those in ANY trouble
. with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”
KID 1 What about when we don’t know what to do?
(KID 19 thinks for a moment.)
KID 19 “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,
. who gives generously to all without finding
. fault, and it WILL be given to you.” James 1:5
KID 1 Well - what about when sad stuff happens?
KID 19 Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-29, “Come to Me,
. all you who are weary and burdened,
. and I will give you rest.
. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
. for I am gentle and humble in heart,
. and you WILL find rest for your souls.”
KID 20 And even when we are the ones who make
. a mess of things, 1 John 1:9 says that
. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just
. and will forgive us our sins and purify us
. from all unrighteousness.”
KID 21 We already know from Isaiah 43:25
. that God says, “I, even I,
. am He who blots out your transgressions,
. for My own sake and remembers your sins no more.”
KID 20 Exactly. When we become Christians,
. God forgives all our sins, even though
. He knows we will continue to make mistakes.
. And because we love God, we want to try to obey
. and live for Him. And when we do- “-we know that
. in all things God works for the good of those
. who love Him, who have been called
. according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
KID 1 We have a purpose? What if I don’t
. do a good job?
KID 20 God promises to help us with that, too.
. “-thanks be to God, who ALWAYS LEADS US
. as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession
. and uses us to spread the aroma
. of the knowledge of Him everywhere.”
. 2 Corinthians 2:14
KID 21 “being confident of this, that He who began
. a good work in you WILL carry it on to completion
. until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6
KID 1 It’s just so amazing that God would keep
. all of those promises.
KID 20 And why wouldn’t He? He loves us so much,
. and He’s all-powerful.
KID 1 So even when other people break their promises,
. I can hold on to God’s promises
. and not be afraid of anything.
KID 21 “No, in all these things we are more
. than conquerors through Him who loved us.
. For I am convinced that neither death nor life,
. neither angels nor demons,
. neither the present nor the future,
. nor any powers, neither height nor depth,
. nor anything else in all creation,
. will be able to separate us from the love of God
. that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37-39
