SKIT 2: JOSIAH’S FAITH                    (go to SKIT 3)

(recite with everyone, and maybe put arm motions to this)

Matthew 18:2-3 (NASB)
“And (Jesus) called a child to Himself
and set him before them, and said,
‘Truly I say to you, unless you are converted
and become like children,
you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.’”

(NARRATOR stands to the side.)

NARRATOR   Sometimes we feel very small and insignificant,
.          but God is big, and He loves us very much.
.          God wants all of us to be His children,
.          all we have to do is answer God’s calling
.          and trust God in all situations.  No matter
.          how old or young, or how big or small we are.
.          Are you feeling helpless?  God wants to help us.
.          Can you ask Him?  Pray.  (hand motions)
.          This is a true story from the Bible
.          that happened a long time ago.
.          There was a boy named Josiah,
.          who became the king of Israel
.          when he was just 8 years old.

(JOSIAH and MAN enter.  MAN puts crown on JOSIAH’s head.)

NARRATOR   At the time this happened,
.          there were many problems in the country.
.          But King Josiah was a curious king
.          who wanted to do what was right.

(JOSIAH goes to the throne to sit down, and motions
for MAN to sit on the floor in front of him.
MAN mimes talking, like he his teaching him.)

NARRATOR   So men told him the history                 2
.          of his country.  Josiah learned that
.          King David was a man after God’s own heart
.          because King David tried to do
.          what was right in God’s eyes.
.          And because of God’s promises,
.          when a king and the country
.          did what was right in God’s eyes,
.          there was peace in the land.
.          But when kings did evil
.          in the sight of the Lord,
.          there would be fighting
.          and big problems in the country.
.          Sometimes God allowed enemies
.          to take the people away to
.          other countries and make them slaves.
.          Now King Josiah’s grandfather,
.          King Manasseh, had done evil
.          in the sight of the Lord.
.          And King Josiah’s own father,
.          King Amon, also did evil
.          in the sight of the Lord.
.          And even though they had both been
.          warned by God’s prophets to stop,
.          they continued to do evil,
.          and worshipped false gods and idols.
.          They even made temples and altars
.          for these false gods and idols
.          and got the people in the country
.          to practice witchcraft
.          and many other evil things.
.          But King Josiah made a decision!

(JOSIAH stands up and points up to God.)

NARRATOR   King Josiah decided that he would NOT
.          be like his father or grandfather,
.          but he would be like King David,
.          and do good in the eyes of God.
.          This was going to be a very big job
.          for such a young king,
.          so he looked to God for help.

(MAN exits while JOSIAH kneels in prayer.)

NARRATOR   God sent help and messages
.          through several prophets.
.          One of these prophets was Jeremiah.

(JEREMIAH enters on the other side of the stage.)
.                                                       3
NARRATOR   When King JOSIAH was about 21 years old,
.          Jeremiah was only about 17 years old.
.          God spoke to the young man, saying:
.          “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
.          And before you were born I consecrated you;
.          I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

(JEREMIAH has slowly gotten down on his knees,
then raises his arms up to God with his question.)

NARRATOR   But Jeremiah said to God, “Alas, Lord God!
.          Behold, I do not know how to speak,
.          Because I am a youth.”

(JEREMIAH puts his arms down again to listen.)

NARRATOR   God then told him, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
.          Because everywhere I send you, you shall go,
.          And all that I command you, you shall speak.
.          Do not be afraid of them,
.          for I am with you to deliver you.
.          Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.”
.          Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem,
.          saying, ‘Thus says the Lord.’”

(JEREMIAH exits and reenters with MAN.
They walk toward JOSIAH, who goes to sit on throne.
JEREMMIAH mimes talking to JOSIAH.)

NARRATOR   Jeremiah had a message from God
.          for the country of Israel.
.          “God says, ‘I remember concerning you
.          the devotion of your youth, oh Israel,
.          but evil has come upon you.
.          If you will return, O Israel,
.          then you should return to Me.
.          Put away your evil things and do not waver.
.          Then the nations will be blessed,
.          And in God they will glory.
.          If you do not, then God’s wrath
.          will go forth like fire that cannot go out,
.          because of the evil of your deeds.”

(JOSIAH nods his agreement.  JEREMIAH bows and exits.
JOSIAH gets up to pace.)

NARRATOR   Josiah did what he could and
.          sent a man to the house of the Lord.

.                                                      4
(JOSIAH points for the MAN to exit.
JOSIAH kneels in prayer.)

NARRATOR   The man was to see how much money was there
.          in order to fix the house of the Lord.
.          While they were fixing the house of the Lord,
.          someone found the book of the law.

(MAN rushes back in, carrying a scroll or book.
JOSIAH sits down and excitedly motions for
MAN to sit and read it.)

NARRATOR   They went back to King Josiah to show him.
.          King Josiah was very happy,
.          and wanted to hear God’s words right away.
.          So they read from the book, and
.          after hearing God’s words,
.          King Josiah tore his clothes,
.          then commanded the priests and other men
.          to go and find out more, because
.          King Josiah wanted to be obedient
.          to everything God has said – no matter
.          how difficult this was going to be.

(JOSIAH and MAN exit together.)

NARRATOR   And because King Josiah had humbled himself
.          before the Lord, and brought the country
.          back to what God wanted them to do,
.          God brought peace to the country
.          for all the years that King Josiah was alive.
.          So, no matter how small you are,
.          or how lonely you feel,
.          God calls us.
.          All we have to do is answer.
.          Can you hear Him?  Listen.  (motions)

.          And no matter how big the situation is.
.          all we have to do is trust in God’s power.
.          Are you feeling helpless?
.          God wants to help us.
.          Can you ask Him?  Pray.  (motions)

.          This is how we can talk to God today:
.          and ask Him to help us with everything.
.          All we have to do is pray.
