(CHILD wanders in and looks around.)

CHILD  Dad?  Dad, are you here?

DAD    (enters)  I’m here.  What is it?  What’s wrong?

CHILD  My friend’s dog just got run over.  He’s very sad.
.      And to make it worse, his sister is very sick
.      in the hospital.  She is very young to be dying.
.      WHY do people and things have to die?
.      Why is there any death at all?

DAD    Hm.  Why don’t we sit down?
.      (waits until CHILD sits)
.      Do you remember our talk about sin?

CHILD  Yes.  God created everything, and everything
.      was perfect.  God created people with a choice,
.      and they chose to disobey God.  And so people
.      brought sin into the world.  So now, bad things
.      happen because there is sin in the world,
.      because people decide to disobey God.

DAD    That is exactly right.  And -

CHILD  Let me guess.  Death is one of those bad things
.      that happens?

DAD    Yes, but there is more to it than that.

CHILD  Death is more than just a bad thing?

DAD    When Adam and Eve sinned, there was a spiritual
.      death.  Their relationship with God was broken.
.      Where there is sin, there is death.
.      And to cover sin there - needs to be blood.
.                                                       2
CHILD  What happened to Adam and Eve?

DAD    They hid from God because they were ashamed,
.      but God found them and spoke to them
.      so that they could fix their relationship.
.      See?  God still loves us, and wants to have
.      a close relationship with all of us,
.      but we all are dead spiritually.
.      Remember talking about God being holy?

CHILD  Yes, God is holy, like pure water, and
.      cannot mix with sin, which is like spilled oil.
.      Somehow God can change us, but I don’t know how.

DAD    Only through God.  God came down as a Man
.      named Jesus, and died for our sins.
.      Because there is sin, there is death.
.      God does not want any of us to die spiritually –
.      He wants us to live forever with Him in heaven,
.      so Jesus came and died FOR us.  So then
.      when we believe in Jesus and what He did for us,
.      His shed blood will turn us from spilled oil
.      to pure water.  Belief in Jesus and what He did
.      for us, can give us new birth, a fresh new start.

CHILD  Dad, this is not making any sense.

DAD    Okay, let’s try to use nature to explain...
.      (CHILD waits patiently as DAD scratches his head)
.      Huh!  There really isn’t any good example
.      in nature for this.  In fact, what Jesus did
.      for us was very unnatural.

CHILD  There must be something close to it.

DAD    All I can think of is the example of the pinecone.
.      The pinecone must die in order for a tree
.      to grow from it.  But the pinecone does not have
.      a brain.  The pinecone cannot choose this,
.      it just happens.

CHILD  So how was Jesus’ death so unnatural?

DAD    Because Jesus CHOSE to suffer and die
.      in our place, for all of us, so that we can then
.      choose to accept Him into our hearts – or not.

(CHILD things about this for a moment.)

CHILD  I guess you only see that in wildlife            3
.      when the mother tries to protect her babies.
.      They will at least fight for their babies.
.      But once they are grown up,
.      then they all become pretty selfish, really.
.      A pet dog might fight to protect his master.

DAD    Those are not bad examples.  The one difference
.      there is that Jesus did not fight.  He willingly
.      gave up His life to die for us.

CHILD  This is still blowing my mind.

DAD    Okay, let’s say, we are all born criminals,
.      and we all deserve to go to prison.
.      It would be like if Jesus does not want us to go
.      to prison, He wants us to have a good and peaceful
.      life with Him forever.  So Jesus decides to go
.      to prison for everyone and serves everyone’s time.
.      But, to keep from going to prison, WE have
.      to admit our crimes and be sorry for them,
.      and be thankful for what Jesus did for us.

CHILD  Except that what He did for us was way harder
.      than just going to prison for us.

DAD    Yes.  He suffered and died, but after three days,
.      Jesus rose from the dead.  This brings victory.
.      Just like when the pinecone dies, life can
.      spring up.  And we can share in that life,
.      if we choose.

CHILD  But this is only for GOOD people.

DAD    Actually, this is for everyone.
.      Did you forget?  We ALL are born sinful.
.      And God loves all of us.

CHILD  But what about the people who do not choose Jesus?

DAD    Sadly, that is there choice.  And this is why
.      we want to tell people about God.

CHILD  What if they never hear about God?

DAD    God is just and fair.  God gives everyone
.      a fair chance.  Remember our discussion
.      on creation?

CHILD  Yes, creation is there to remind us about God.
.                                                       4
DAD    The vast complexities of nature proves
.      that God does exist and has great plans for us.
.      But we still need to tell people about God...
.      We should pray that you are able to share this
.      with your friend and his sister.

CHILD  Will that keep my friend’s sister from dying?

DAD    We never know how much time we have here on earth.
.      But when we become a Christian, we know
.      that we will have eternal life in heaven.

CHILD  Well, then what are we waiting for.
.      Let’s go tell them this good news.
