GOOD INCENTIVES – written by Tanis Harms
TOPIC:        reasons to have devotions
SCRIPTURE:    Ps.78:1-8; 2Tim.3:14-17
Style:        drama/conversation: a parent challenges
.             their child to study for school, only
.             to be challenged in the same way
.             regarding devotions
Cast:         PARENT, KID
Set & Props:  chair or sofa, end table, Bible,
.             laptop or novel, backpack, paper

SCRIPT:

(PARENT sits and reads or plays a game on a laptop.
KID enters carrying backpack and waves a paper at PARENT
to get the attention.)

KID       Guess what?  I got an A+ on my history paper!

PARENT    (finally looking up)  That is awesome, honey.

KID       Soooo, what is my reward?

PARENT    Your reward is the A+.

KID       Mom/Dad!  My friends get money or a treat
.         whenever they get good grades.

PARENT    What kind of incentive is that?
.         So later on when you go out and get a job,
.         you will only be motivated by money?

KID       What?

PARENT    Don’t do it to please me, or the teachers.
.         The best incentive is – to do it for God,
.         because you love God...
.         as well as to do it for the LOVE of learning.
.         School is for YOU - to learn things–
.         which will help YOU have a better future.

KID       Got it.

PARENT    Now, do you have any homework to do?

KID       Ah, no, but I do have my                      2
.         Sunday School project.

PARENT    Okay.

(PARENT goes back to reading novel or playing game.
KID just stands there and watches.)

PARENT    (looking up)  What?

KID       I need to know something, so I can
.         check it off in my chart.  This chart
.         is to help take the spiritual pulse of my family.
.         So - have you had your devotions today?

(PARENT quickly looks over at the Bible.  Sighing,
PARENT puts novel/laptop down, picks up Bible,
quickly dusts it off, and opens it randomly.)

PARENT    (quickly reading)  Ah, “so God then said,
.         something-something-something– blah-blah-blah-“

(While closing the Bible and putting it down, PARENT
uses a swooping arm motion to refer to GOD and KID.)

PARENT    There!  HAPPY now?  Do I get a star?

(PARENT reaches for novel/laptop again.)

KID       Hm.  You know, Mom/Dad...
.         don’t do it to please me, or the teachers.
.         The best incentive is – to do it for God,
.         because you love God...
.         as well as to do it
.         for the LOVE of learning about God.
.         Devotions are for YOU - to learn things–
.         which will help you have a better future.

PARENT    (thinking, sighing, then reaching for Bible)
.         You o dmake a very wise and excellent point.
