F   I’m sure some of these people will be able to offer
.   more guidance than I’m able to give you, right now.

A   So, which group of people should we approach?

F   (sighs)  It is not always easy to tell.
.   At least, not always by first impressions.
.   But once you get to know people a little bit,
.   it becomes more obvious.  Something about fruit.

A   Fruit?

F   Yeah, like, things that they stand for- become-
.   obvious.
.                                                      2
A   You still don’t make any sense.  Is this fruit-
.   good or bad?

F   Fruit is good.  I know that much.  Ahhh- okay, like,
.   if they say that they love you, and then do things
.   like help you out – with no strings attached –

A   Fruit?

F   Exactly.  I think.

A   You still don’t seem too confident in your answers.

F   Like I said, I know the answers are in this book,
.   but I’m still just very new at this.  I mean,
.   I know SOME things, and I know – what I know.
.   AND I know - that I need to way know more.
.   And other people can help with that.

A   I just want to know the truth.

F   That’s a good thing.

A   Let’s do this then!  So- which group of people
.   should we approach?

F   I say – that one.  (points to KNOWLEDGEABLE)

A   Ahhhh, I’m thinking the other one.  They have
.   more books.

(ALICE marches toward WISHY-WASHY GROUP and stands there
waiting to get their attention.  Finally W1 looks up.)

W1  Hey!  Hi there.  Can... I help you?

A   I hope so.  I want to know the truth.

W2  What kind of truth?

A   THE truth.

F   God’s truth.  In other words, we want to know more
.   about God’s word in the Bible.

W1  Oh, well, that’s a very big book.
.                                                      3
W2  Yeah, LOTS of pages.  With LOTS of truth.

F   Right, but I know from John 3:16 that
.   God sent His one and only Son to die for us
.   so that when we believe, we will have
.   eternal life with Him in heaven.

W1  (philosophically)  But when we “believe” –
.   what is all really involved in that?

W2  And what IS eternal?  Is it really forever...
.   as this author writes about in his book.
.   (picks up a book and flips through the pages)

W1  This author, here, goes into other debates
.   on that issue.  (picking up another book)
.   But, what’s really clear is that you need
.   to know things so you can do them right.

F   Yes!  So, what does the Bible say about it?

W1  It says many things... I think.

W2  And FEEL.  If it doesn’t FEEL right, then
.   I’m pretty sure it’s probably not in the Bible.

W1  There is a verse in the Bible- something about
.   knowing, believing and asking – then getting stuff.

W2  I’m definitely feeling that.  Like, in this book-
.   (picking up a book)   It supposedly covers
.   the topic - about getting stuff.

W1  Does that author say if that is a good thing,
.   or a bad thing?  Because THIS author says-
.   (picks up another book)

F   Again – what does the Bible say?

W1  Well, that’s the thing.  All of these authors
.   have studied the Bible and have come up with
.   different ideas and interpretations.

W2  That’s why I recommend that you read whichever
.   books you feel are closest to what you want.

A   But there IS purpose to life?!                     4

W1  Sure.

W2  Of course.  God wants us to feel good.

F   As in joy!  God wants us to experience joy!

W1  Yes!  I know the Bible has the word “joy” in it-
.   in several places.  From what I remember.

W2  Definitely!

A   So how do you find joy?

W1  That’s very complicated.

W2  Yeah, you really need to-

F   FEEL IT?

W2  Yeeeaaah.  And read lots more books on the topic.
.   One cannot study enough.

F   What about putting into practice the stuff
.   you have learned?

W2  It is WAY better to be knowledgeable.

F   And wise?

W2  What’s the difference?

W1  Oh!  I’ve got a book right here on wisdom.
.   Something about application.

F   You mean, wisdom is knowing how to apply
.   the knowledge that you gain?

W2  That sounds good.  You should write a book.

(FRIEND looks at ALICE with arms out in questioning
wonder, like ‘what is going on?’)

A   I feel like I’ve been here before.

W2  Déjà vu?
.                                                       5
A   I’m just getting the run around.  I want something
.   definite.  I want know the truth.

W1  Definitely!  There is definitely truth.

F   This is a waste of time.

W2  You’re doubting OUR word?

F   That’s the problem – all we are getting is YOUR word,
.   whatever that’s worth.  More questions than answers.
.   I am more interested in God’s word.  Come on.

(FRIEND leads ALICE to the other table.
WISHY-WASHY GROUP waves them off and exits.
KNOWLEDGEABLE GROUP looks up, intent on helping.)

F   Hi, we seriously need some answers.

K1  Okay.  We’ll do our best to help.

A   Thank you.  I want to know if there is purpose.

K1  I believe there is a verse – in Romans.

(K2 finds the verse from the Bible and reads it.)

K2  Romans... 8:28 says, “And we know that God
.   causes all things to work together for good
.   to those who love God, to those who are called
.   according to His purpose.”

A   So that includes love.

K2  Yes, to love God is to believe in Him and
.   accept what He has done for us.

A   And does this also include – joy?

K1  Romans 15:13 says, “Now may the God of hope
.   fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
.   so that you will abound in hope by the power
.   of the Holy Spirit.”

F   So, not only joy, but peace and hope.

K1  Yes.  And when we believe, we can KNOW that        6
.   we are saved and that we are secure in this.
.   There are many awesome verses on this.

K2  One is found in... 1 Corinthians 2:12-13.
.   (reading)  “Now we have received,
.   not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit
.   who is from God, so that we may know the things
.   freely given to us by God, which things we also
.   speak, not in words taught by human wisdom,
.   but in those taught by the Spirit, combining
.   spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.”

F   That’s deep.  I have so much to learn.

A   Me, too.  So will you teach us everything?

K1  Well, we can certainly help you.  The pastor’s
.   messages on Sundays are meant to equip us.
.   Also at our church, there are lots of great
.   Bible study groups.  You can get involved in those.

K2  What’s even better about our church is –
.   we claim that the Bible, God’s word,
.   is the final authority.

A   What does that actually mean?

K2  Well, just because we teach something, or interpret
.   a verse a certain way – we encourage you to learn
.   and study the Bible on your own.

K1  2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to “Be diligent to
.   present yourself approved to God as a workman
.   who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling
.   the word of truth.”

F   There’s even a verse on THAT?

A   So that’s why you don’t have all those other books?

K1  It’s not that you cannot read other books.
.   Some books are very good at helping and guiding us
.   to learn what is already there in the Bible.
.   But those books are still only written by people.
.   The Bible is really written by God.  And as you study
.   the Bible more, the more you see how obvious that is.
.                                                      7
K2  God wants to speak directly to each of us through
.   His word, so that we can know for ourselves,
.   and be confident about what we believe.

A   But those other people made it seem like it was
.   next to impossible to really KNOW anything.

K1  God doesn’t expect us to know everything
.   all at once.  And because we love God,
.   we should just WANT to keep learning,
.   and putting into practice the things we learn.

K2  And the best part is that God is right there
.   and wants to HELP US do everything...
.   even help us study and understand the Bible.

K1  As 2 Timothy 2:7 tells us that “the Lord will
.   give you understanding in everything.”

A   You both sound so sure of everything.

K2  1 John 5:20 says, “And we know that
.   the Son of God has come, and has given us
.   understanding so that we may know Him who is true;
.   and we are in Him who is true, in His Son
.   Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.”

K1  Are- are we answering your questions?

A   Aaaaaand so much more.

F   I’m feeling overwhelmed.

K1  Sorry.  I know I can get carried away.
.   Bottom line is - “For everyone who asks receives,
.   and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks
.   it will be opened.”  That’s found in Matthew 7:8.

A   Where do you even start?

(K2 holds the Bible out to ALICE.  LIGHTS DIM.)
